MoneyMate is a regulated fintech platform connecting real financial accounts, budgeting, and reporting for our users. This role exists to make sure that as we scale, our infrastructure decisions, our codebase, and our vendor relationships are being evaluated by someone who understands the system end to end — and who is working in the company’s interest, not any single vendor’s or contractor’s.
Position Summary
The Technical Project Manager acts as the company’s internal technical authority and project owner across the engineering effort. This person does not write production code, does not administer AWS, and does not replace the developer or the AWS systems administrator — their job is to sit above both, understand what each is doing well enough to evaluate it, and protect the company’s technical and financial interests in every conversation where infrastructure, code, or vendor scope is on the table.
This is a dual-mandate role: technical advisor and project manager. Both responsibilities are core to the position, not split across two hires.
Core Responsibilities
1. Technical Advisory & Vendor Oversight
- RFP and vendor scoping — participate directly in conversations with vendors and in the scoping of RFPs, asking the technical questions that protect the company from being over-sold, under-scoped, or locked into an approach that doesn’t fit our architecture.
- AWS proposal review — understand what the AWS systems administrator is proposing (infrastructure changes, service additions, scaling decisions, cost implications) well enough to ask informed questions and flag risk before it’s approved. This role is not the AWS admin and will not perform AWS configuration directly.
- Code review — read code well enough to review the developer’s pull requests for quality, consistency, and adherence to company standards before they merge. This role is not the developer and will not write production code.
- Advisor of record — act as the company’s independent technical advisor in any room where a vendor, contractor, or third party is proposing work, cost, or architecture — the person whose job is to ask “is this actually in our best interest” before a decision is made.
2. System Stability & Troubleshooting
- Database review — review the database for inconsistencies, redundant records, and data integrity issues that create downstream instability. On MoneyMate specifically, this includes flagging orphaned or mismatched records, redundant fields, and state inconsistencies between related tables.
- Root-cause triage — when the system is unstable — including issues that present as CORS errors, infinite request loops, or requests that never resolve — lead the triage effort to identify whether the root cause is a data integrity issue, a configuration issue, or a code defect, and route it to the right owner (developer or AWS admin) for the actual fix.
- Stability first — when something is breaking in production or UAT, this role owns getting the system back to stable as quickly as possible — coordinating whoever needs to be in the room, not necessarily doing the hands-on fix.
3. Project Management & Delivery
- Team leadership — lead the working team: the AWS systems administrator and the full-stack developer. Set clear vision and goals for each phase of work, assign tasks and responsibilities, and provide direct feedback.
- Planning — own project documentation, translate client and business requests into concrete project plans, and communicate with the development team to keep a clear, current plan of tasks ahead.
- Scheduling — create and maintain timelines and milestones aligned to software development resources, and re-plan as needed when risks or blockers surface — without letting scope drift.
- Execution tracking — manage execution of the plan, track progress against it, and serve as the liaison between key stakeholders and developers.
- Testing & QA — develop test plans based on client and business requirements, execute them at the appropriate phases of development, and review results to confirm the product meets the requirements before anything ships.
What This Role Is Not
This distinction matters, and it’s intentional — blurred roles are how requirements drift and defects ship in a regulated financial platform.
- Not the AWS Systems Administrator — advises on and questions AWS proposals; does not configure AWS infrastructure directly.
- Not the Full-Stack Developer — reads and reviews code; does not write production code.
- Is the Project Manager — this role carries full project management responsibility in addition to its technical advisory function; it is not being hired alongside a separate PM.
Working Principles for This Role
Compensation
HOURLY RANGE: $45–$60/HR
Based on an equivalent salaried cash base of $95K–$120K/year for this scope at Atlanta startups — below full market rate for a comparable Technical Project Manager role ($120K–$150K base at established companies), consistent with typical startup-stage compensation.
What We’re Looking For
- Deep, working familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS strongly preferred: RDS, Elastic Beanstalk, Lambda, Cognito, S3/CloudFront, SQS, EventBridge) sufficient to evaluate proposals and vendor scope critically.
- Ability to read and review code (Node.js / React.js environments) even without hands-on production development responsibility.
- Direct experience running vendor and RFP conversations from the client side — someone who has sat across the table and knows what to watch for.
- Proven project management background: planning, scheduling, stakeholder communication, and QA/test plan development.
- Comfort working in a regulated financial services environment where data integrity and system stability carry compliance weight, not just user-experience weight.
