Compensation: Monthly retainer that scales with our partner base. Part of the package is deferred at a premium, with a defined trigger and a backstop date. We will walk through the full structure on the first call.
The Opportunity & Your Mission
Practice Flow is an AI Transformation Consulting firm for private healthcare practices. We train practice teams to get real value from the AI tools they already pay for. We deliver through independent partners, and we now have eight of them working under three different agreements.
The delivery model works. The finance function under it does not exist yet. That is the job.
Eight partners is where we are, not where we are going. What you build has to survive the firm getting several times larger, and you will be the person who tells us how fast that can happen.
You are the first finance hire. You will pick the accounting software, bring the books current, and build the calculation that determines what every partner earns. Then you will run the monthly cycle and tell us what the numbers mean.
The ledger.
We bank with Mercury and have not chosen accounting software, because that call is yours. Select it, implement it, and design a chart of accounts that separates revenue by product and cost by partner agreement.
The compensation engine.
Turn three partner agreements into one reliable calculation. Advancement ladders, conditional rates, recurring residuals, and clawbacks. Rates apply as of the date we collected the client payment, so the math is historical. This is the deliverable the role is judged on.
The monthly cycle.
Two payment runs against contractual deadlines, a statement for every partner, and a month end test of each partner against their advancement gates. Miss that test and someone is quietly underpaid.
The cash cycle.
Client invoicing, receivables, and revenue recognition. We collect before we deliver on most engagements, so deferred revenue is real here and nothing tracks it today.
The model.
Forecast, budget, cash planning, and scenarios. Which products actually carry margin after partner compensation. What ten more partners does to cash. Where the next dollar earns the most. Nobody here can answer any of that yet.
How the Seat Works
We split this deliberately, and the split is worth understanding before you apply.
- You prepare payments. The founder approves and releases them. Nobody here both calculates a payment and sends it. That control protects you when a partner questions a number.
- Process is yours. The model is advisory. You own the close calendar, the ledger, the statement format, and the controls. Pricing, partner rates, and contract terms are decided by the firm, with your analysis in front of them.
- You are not paid on revenue or profit. You calculate what everyone earns, so your own pay never floats on a number you produce. Your compensation is a retainer that steps up as the partner base grows.
- Clear boundaries: you never handle patient data, never negotiate with a client, and never manage partners.
Time Commitment
Roughly 20 to 30 hours a month once the function is running. The first quarter is heavier, closer to 40 hours a month, because the stack, the books, and the compensation engine all get built in that window.
Remote, and you set your own schedule. The monthly deadlines are fixed and everything else is yours to arrange.
First 90 Days
Your first quarter has one purpose. Turn a spreadsheet into a system.
- By day 30 you have read all three partner agreements, taken the interim ledger from the founder, and delivered your accounting stack recommendation.
- By day 60 the stack is live, the books are current, and you have run a full close and a full statement cycle on it.
- By day 90 the compensation engine is documented well enough that a competent successor could run a close from your notes alone, deferred revenue is tracked, and we have our first real management report.
Qualifications
Required
- You have owned a monthly close end to end. Real chart of accounts, accrual basis, revenue recognition.
- Small company experience. Under 20 people, ideally where you arrived before the books were clean.
- Deep spreadsheet fluency. You can build a model someone else can still use a year later. The compensation engine starts there before it lives anywhere else.
- You can read a contract and turn it into arithmetic. Conditional rates and clawback mechanics should interest you rather than annoy you.
- Genuine independence. No finance team, no manager above you, no analyst beside you.
- Comfortable selecting and implementing accounting software from scratch.
- You have built a financial model someone made a real decision from. Forecast, scenarios, and a clear answer at the end of it.
Preferred
- Professional services, agency, or consulting economics, where people cost is the main cost.
- Experience with contractor or partner compensation, commissions, or revenue share.
- Fractional or portfolio finance work with early stage companies.
- Familiarity with Mercury, HubSpot, or comparable tools.
- CPA or equivalent, though we care more about what you have closed than what you hold.
- A record of building a finance function that outgrew the way you first built it.
Why You Are Not a Fit
- You want to work on strategy and hand the ledger to someone else. For the first quarter this role is mostly the ledger.
- You need a team, a system already in place, or a defined process to step into. None of that exists here.
- You want to govern the model rather than advise on it. You build the analysis behind pricing, partner rates, and contract terms. The firm decides them.
- You need every dollar in cash on day one. Part of this package is deferred, and we will be specific about the terms.
- You want to run the same close every month for the next five years. The first version of this function is small. The firm it has to serve will not be.

Pay: $100.00 – $150.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5.0 – 10.0 per week
