The Role

We are looking for an experienced Controller to support Adare Capital clients and work closely with our fractional CFOs.

This is a hands-on role for someone who knows how to take ownership of the accounting function and ensure the numbers are accurate, the close is timely, processes are working, and leadership can trust the financial information they are receiving.

Depending on the client, you may be stepping into a well-established accounting department that needs stronger leadership or an organization where processes, reporting, and controls still need to be built.

You should be equally comfortable reviewing financial statements with a CFO, working through a reconciliation issue with a bookkeeper, and identifying a process that needs to be rebuilt.

What You’ll Do

• Own and oversee the monthly financial close process.
• Review financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
• Manage and review account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and general ledger activity.
• Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Identify and correct accounting issues, process gaps, and reporting inconsistencies.
• Improve the quality and timeliness of financial reporting.
• Manage and develop bookkeepers and other accounting team members.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow reporting, and management reporting.
• Prepare schedules and information for CPAs, tax advisors, lenders, auditors, and other outside partners.
• Help clients improve or transition accounting systems, workflows, and financial processes.
• Partner with the Adare fractional CFO to ensure the accounting function supports the company’s broader financial strategy.
• Step into complex or imperfect environments and create structure without losing momentum.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who has actually owned the accounting function, not simply participated in it.

You should have:

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or equivalent responsibility.
• Strong command of GAAP and accrual accounting.
• Significant experience owning the month-end close and producing accurate financial statements.
• Strong understanding of balance sheet reconciliations, revenue and expense recognition, working capital, and cash flow.
• Experience managing or reviewing the work of bookkeepers and accounting staff.
• Advanced Excel skills and the ability to work comfortably with accounting and ERP systems.
• Experience identifying accounting problems and implementing practical solutions.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to non-financial leaders.
• The judgment to know when something can be solved independently and when it should be escalated to the CFO.

CPA or CMA is a plus, but strong hands-on experience matters more to us than credentials alone.

Experience in industries such as construction, manufacturing, professional services, healthcare, or other growing privately held businesses is especially valuable.

Pay:

$50.00 – $100.00 per hour

Expected hours:

No more than 40.0 per week
