If you’ve closed the books for more than one entity and you’re ready to own the process end to end instead of executing someone else’s checklist, this is your seat. It’s also our main path into the CFO role, so if that’s the seat you’re ultimately building toward, this is how many of our CFOs got there. Synergy Solutions is a fractional CFO and business-management firm based in Belmont, New Hampshire, serving owner-operated companies across the US. We’re hiring fractional controllers to run the close on our client engagements. You’d report to our Head Controller. You own the monthly close and the accuracy of the books for your clients. You’re the bridge between the bookkeeper doing the day-to-day and the CFO presenting to the owner. When the books have to tie, that’s on you. Clean books by the 10th give the CFO five days to review, analyze, and deliver by the 15th. Miss the 10th and the whole chain breaks. The number that matters: 100% of assigned clients closed by the 10th (all accounts reconciled, financials prepared, workpapers filed), every month.
What you’d own
The monthly close for your client list: reconcile every balance sheet account (bank, AR, AP, payroll, loans, credit cards) and clear reconciling items, with zero unresolved items over 30 days Monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), a consistent chart of accounts, and variance notes on anything moving more than 10% Payroll through Gusto: process or oversee it, reconcile payroll liabilities monthly, and keep W-2s, 1099s, and payroll tax filings current Clean books and workpapers handed to the CFO ahead of client delivery, with questions answered within 24 hours Your own deadlines. If something’s at risk, the CFO hears it before the date, not after.
What we need from you
Controller-level experience closing books for multiple entities Strong QuickBooks Online skills and comfort in Excel or Google Sheets Gusto payroll experience and a clean compliance record. Zero payroll tax penalties is the bar. Accrual-basis accounting you can explain to a non-accountant owner Someone who catches the error before it reaches the CFO
Where this goes
This seat sits right below the CFO, and we built it that way on purpose. You’ll review the CFO’s models, sit close to the strategy conversations, and pick up the judgment calls that don’t show up in a textbook. When you’re ready to carry your own advisory book, the CFO seat is the next stop.
The arrangement
A contract seat with Synergy, remote. You run the close for a portfolio of client engagements on our behalf. Expect a 160-hour monthly minimum across your book. Client load scales with capacity.
